Legacy: A Poem
Maybe my legacy will be fresh baked muffins
Or a great cup of coffee
Maybe it will be a book
Or an open door and a listening ear
It probably won’t be
A perfectly curated living room
Or a beautiful masterpiece
Or a gourmet meal
Most likely my legacy
Will be built on the back
of those who went first
Grandma’s banana bread
The first couple to invite us for dinner
And friend who folded my laundry
Or asked to babysit my kiddos
The ones who called first
Invited first
Texted first
Who tried and failed
And tried again
Who didn’t fear failure
But loved out of what they had
And shared it generously
To those who went first
And taught me what could be
And what should be
And how to give of yourself
Without hesitation
You are my legacy
