Give me a Tree
Some say they would love to fly
To touch the sky
But I don’t think you need wings to get there
To fly is to be at the mercy of the wind
That blows in every direction all at once
I would rather climb a tree
One with roots anchoring them deep
A thick trunk that tells the tale of generations before me
Green leaves shade me
when I am too tired to keep reaching
Sturdy branches hold firm underneath me
when I need a place to rest
They are strong and anchored
but have never stopped growing
Extending to the sky
Birds fly through the air with no limit or restraint
But they make their nest in a trusty tree
One that is a safe haven when the sky is too vast
And the wind is too strong
They go out and explore the horizon
But the tree never uproots and walks away
It is always right where they left it
Tall and strong, never bowing in defeat
The sky is nice for a moment
The clouds are pretty but can never be claimed
No creature makes its home in the sky
Give me a tree to climb
One that has stood the test of time
One that will nudge me toward heights
But never leave me suspended
A firm foundation when the wind blows too strong
Give me a tree
With roots run deep
One that will never be moved
